The following is a translation of "Practical Course of Advanced Yoga and elements of medical diagnostics and healing" published in 1991 in Russian in Vestnik magazine (www.vestnik.com). This course is based on methods and lectures of V.I.Orlov. In addition, this course draws on the experience and the publications of V.Antonov, G.Statsenko, Ya.Koltunov, S.Mitrofanov, B.Sakharov, V.R.B. and author's own experience.

LECTURE 3

Mitahara.

Let's talk about Mitahara - the art of pure eating. You can eat anything. But if you are striving for faster results, it's better to follow Mitahara. Strict Mitahara prescribes using the minimal amount of complementary foods per meal and having two or three meals a day. One of the meals can be a glass of milk with dried fruits, another - a handful of rice with water, a third one - sour fruits. The diet is assumed to be vegetarian with the addition of milk and milk products, rarely - pouched eggs. Salty produce (pickled/salted tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, mushrooms, fish roe) and sweets (preserves, jams, honey, candy, cookies, chocolate, cakes, pastries) are not to be used. In general, a weakness for sweets or pickled products is considered a reflection of childhood-based complexes, which ought to be fought. Rice, naturally, must be thermally prepared (steamed) - the rice can be both processed and unprocessed. Practically all the cereals and beans are allowed. If you can't tolerate fresh milk, use fermented milk products instead. Avoid fatty cottage cheese. Try not to fry anything. The bread should be made of unrefined brands of wheat or rye that are rich in fiber. Avoid coffee, strong tea and sodas.

Hatha-Yoga

Hatha-Yoga is a system of caring for one's body. The most important component of this system is body poses - Asanas. What is significant for us here is that the pose for meditation should be comfortable and stable and the breathing - free and imperceptible. There are many good books on Hatha-Yoga where, if you desire, you can find a lot of difficult, exotic poses, rules of hygiene, breathing exercises. We are not going to get into Hatha-Yoga's numerous details here except noting that Pranayama (breathing exercises) is an extremely powerful technique adjoining Hatha-Yoga with Advanced Yoga. As a reference we are offering here the depictions of the most important Asanas.
